Do thoughts of winter terrify your green thumb? Does working dirty in the biting cold not appeal to you? Well, it doesn’t, to most of us. And that is why smarter growers find smarter ways to keep growing, regardless of what season it is. And the smartest of them all are hydroponics growers, who’ve discovered the easiest way to keep growing their favourite fruits and vegetables all year round. Hydroponics is growing that’s not soil-based. While it is often taken to mean only growing plants in water, it actually includes a variety of techniques; growing plants with their roots suspended in air – aeroponics, for example.

A good way to continue your hydroponics endeavours throughout the year, through sun and rain, is to take them indoors. It is relatively easy to build an indoor grow room. You must select a small room or closet or a sectioned off area of your basement. Ensure that the room you choose has a power source that is necessary or hydroponics equipment. Remove all carpeting because the floor needs to be hard and dry. Mildew and mould from water leakage will ruin your carpets anyway.

Seal your windows with black plastic. You could even hang some black plastic on the door, but hang it like a curtain to allow access, making sure you cut off all other light. Select a grow light system you like and install it. Your light system should be one that can be physically raised and lowered. You can use chains or cables to ensure stability. Don’t even think of using flammable materials!

Use small table fans, low-power ones, for circulation. If your hydroponics setup is in your closet, even a single fan will suffice. Finally, the plants! Place your grow tables beneath the grow lights you have previously installed. Work out a drainage system for the tables and if you have that extra bit of conscience, you will also learn how to recycle the excess water you generate. For the watering schedules, you can use pumps with timers; also if you use irrigation, a timer will ensure even watering. Even your hydroponic lighting system might benefit from a timer, because your light cycle needs to mimic the natural day and night cycle.

About Chris Fason

The best part of a hydroponic system is the control you can have over all the elements that affect your hydroponics crops. Controlled environment agriculture is best achieved within the greenhouse environment; however, scientists at NASA have created self-growing habitats that accomplish this control.

I am so glad I don’t eat all that processed food anymore. Having my own garden and feeding my family from it has been very healthy for us.
